Vikings down, but not out!
The young Vikings completed their first series win on home soil for two seasons when they completed a well fought game with the Club Cricket Conference (CCC) at Svanholm Park yesterday.
Once again heavy overnight rain prevented the the game taking place on grass, but the Danes on winning the toss had no hesitation in batting on what has been a fair track over both games this weekend. Freddie Klokker 41 continued his recent good form with the bat in a seventy run opening partnership with Troels Thørgesen 21, but the home side lost concentration and several quick wickets throughout their innings. Only Naveed Mohgul 41 offered any resistance to the consisitant CCC attack as the home side failed to use their alloted 50 overs in their final total of 172. For the visitors, J Granger 3 for 33 was the pick of the bowlers, M Smith and P Robbins supported well with a tight opening spell. Former England International Min Patel played with an injury returning figure of 2 for 42 in his alloted ten overs.
In reply the CCC batsman found life easier today against some inconsistent Danish bowling, the last days line and length being replaced by a loose delivery an over. Allrounder M Smith managed to complie a patient 54 not out, and he was well supported by Burge 34 and Patel 26 as the visitors were pushed to the last three balls of the game to win the match. For the Vikings Bashir Shah claimed 4 for 37, Yasir Iqbal, Bobby Chawla and Jacob Iqbal all claimed a wicket apiece. Once again the Danes showed outstanding improvement in the field with their catching, but the days batting performance was the difference between the two sides.
Needless to say National Coach, Simon Talbot was ever up beat about the performance of his young charges.
